World's number one competition sport: Sailing

Sailing is a sport on basis of only moving a boat by using power of the wind. Sailing appeared as a sport first in Netherlands. King Charles II brought sailing to England when he came back from exile.

 

Then, sailing expanded in other countries of the world. Nowadays this sport addressed to a big mass besides doing with terrific physical performance and as a funny and social activity.

 

The races in which best sailors compete has been organized since 1851.

 

Format and standards of sailing races are determined by World Sailing Federation and applied as followings.

FLEET RACING

Boats race around a course which is defined by buoys and geographical shapes. This is most extensive and competitive sailing way.

 

MATCH RACING

In this race ony two boats which are totally same races to each other. This format of race is a duel of startegy and tactic and tha aim is very simple – to be the first out of finish line.

 

TEAM RACING

Team racing includes two teams consist of three or four boats which races to each other. This is an up-tempo racing style on basis of excellent use of boat and speedy tactical decision.

 

OFFSHORE & OCEANIC RACES

This type of racing addresses a big mass in the world and it is accepted as one of the most hard nature sports. Oceanic race is described as any open sea race 800 miles.

 

PARA SAILING

It is a type of sailing race which the boats are designed for handicapped people by categorized their handicaps.

Racing in Turkey

In our country sailing, which sprouted in around 1850, beginned with races of yacht owners who were depended on clubs in Buyukada, Moda and Yesilkoy. Sailing activities which have to stop between 1914-1923 because of various battles were updated in 1923 by establishing Water Sports Federation which included Sailing, Paddleboarding and Swimming. Sailing branch separated from Water Sports Federation in 1957 and Turkish Sailing Federation was officially established on May 25,1957. However, Turkey’s membership of International Yacht Racing Association (namely on those days) was realized much earlier in 1932.

 

Turkish Sailing Federation sets standards of sailing schools, organizes national team and training camps for sportsmen in different levels, organizes sportmen and referee training seminars, organizes racings, regulates organized races to introduce, develop and expand sailing and ensures best representing our country in every respect in international platform.

 

Nowadays in daggerboard classes, which are the base of a performance sport, city races are organized by Provincial Directorate of Youth and Sports, private races, national races, national team election races and title races are spreaded in country. Also, recreative aimed yachting races, windsurfing races and kiteboarding races are realized regularly.

Olympics and sailing

Sailing was accepted as a olympic sport in the Paris Olympic Games in 1900. From then it was always in progress to reflect improvements of design and technology of boat classes. Progresses in boat and materials in last 20 years brought into prominence both athletic and technic capacities of sailors more than ever, created leaning to more little and lighter boats. From time to time olympics were realized in fleet racing and match racing formats. Now, there are races only in fleet racing format in olympics.

Racing in Yalikavak Sailing Club

With summer courses that we arrange in our club firstly we try to expand sailing and also we try to create a positive effect on especially lives of children and youngsters by features of sailing.

 

Besides that we present best club and training services for our participants who love sailing and want to be a sportsman. According to national team election system determined by Turkish Sailing Federation, we prepare our sportsmen for target selection races during the year and accompany them in this road for wearing national uniform which carry them most proud level in sailing.

 

In Yalikavak Sailing Club we realize comprehensive training and racing programs in classes of Optimist, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, Laser Standard, and Techno 293. In our club which have best technical teams and we improve our sportsmen’s technique, tactic and strategic skills with private approaches by keeping them in center by using methodical and technical procedures.

 

Our club has been increasing its success gradually from establishment date and has a big development with the medals gained in national races in Optimist class which is most important substructure class in the world.

 

Our works continues dynamically to make this success sustainable and to become it a sport tradition in our club free from persons.

 

We keep best development process alive to our sportsmen in an family environment in which knowledgement transfers from generation to generation, previous generation supports to next one. We are conscious that if we develop together, success comes.

 

Our targets are not for only medals in our club. Our first aim to grow hardworking, disciplined and intellectually developed youngsters who are equipped with dynamics of sailing sport and as a result of this who have equipment that ensure them to finish all job they take in other areas of life.

 

We believe that medals come naturally….
